2022 Project
The problem: This Superfund site was previously an industrial landfill which had also been converted into a city park, and which included soccer and baseball fields. The City of South Bend and EPA found that the soils contained a high level of lead.
The solution/work performed: HRP brought 13,000 cubic yards of approved fill into the project to cap the contaminated soil. All employees working on the site that would come into contact with the contaminated soils had to be HAZWOPER trained. The entire site needed to be fenced off while HRP was performing the work. Since this park had to remain open, HRP performed the work in phases to allow the City to still operate the park.
What was interesting about the project: HRP had to perform a mass earthwork operation under the supervision of the EPA, the City of South Bend, a third party consultant, and a representative from the design engineer. Coordination between all the parties involved was critical to keep this project moving. HRP had to meet the standards of both the EPA and City specifications throughout this project.
